The Low Down!
Guest blogging is a fantastic way to showcase your expertise in a topic, and to grow your audience. If you choose the right blog and topic to write about then you’re onto a winner. Here are my top tips to help you choose which blogs to target, make that first pitch & write the perfect blog post!
Create a list of target blogs
Look for blogs in a field complementary to the one you are working on, whose readers are likely to love what you have to say and chime with your message too.
Read the blog!
This is a good one – you’d be surprised how many people send pitches without actually reading the blog first. Editors can smell that a mile off and you’re unlikely to get success doing this. Make sure you get a real feel for the type of content they like to include, and the type of blogs that their readers enjoy reading.
Make your pitch unique
This is your chance to shine, think about what you can offer that gives a different or unique spin to your topic – something which their readers are going to find really useful.
Follow their submission guidelines
Most of the top blogs will have guidelines on their website outlining how to submit a blog or an idea. If you can find direct contact details for an editor then that is a great way to start finding out exactly what they are looking for and building relationships.
Find them on Twitter
Follow the blog and the editor and strike up a conversation – just make sure you don’t spam them with your product!
Prepare a pitch email
Some blogs will want you to send the idea, and others will ask for the whole blog to be submitted. In your email, explain who you are and a bit about your business, as well as outlining why you think their readers will love reading your post. You can also include links to previous blogs that you’ve published too.
Write your best blog
You want to create a good impression and encourage their readers to follow you too, so make sure you take the time to submit your best blog posts which are really going to be engaging and add value.
Include a link to your website
You can do this in your profile, and also once in the main blog. Make sure the blog is not all promoting you, but it’s still a great way to send readers back to your site. And make sure you have a newsletter sign up form on the page they land on, making it easy for people to join your mailing list too. I recommend Mailchimp for this if you are just starting out.
There are soooo many benefits to guest blogging, it forms a really important part of my marketing strategy and I’ve seen some great results for my business and my clients too. And what’s more, it’s great fun to think of new topics to write about and to collaborate with other entrepreneurs!
